Laila Bushra
Ms. Bushra has a Ph.D. in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University. Her research focuses on the relationship between neoliberal globalisation and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in Pakistan. She is interested in multiple manifestations of Islamic fundamentalism, including political, militant, and civic. Prior to joining Melbourne University, she taught social theory, political economy, and historical sociology at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan. My publications include both empirical and theoretical chapters in an edited volume titled Paramilitary Groups and the State under Globalization: Political Violence, Elites, and Security. She recently finished a Master of Public Policy and Management (MPPM) from the University of Melbourne, and is currently working there as a tutor.

She has published her research on non-state Islamist militant groups and presented her research on civic militant groups as a postdoctoral fellow at the South Asia Institute at Harvard University. Recently, she presented her work at the Center for Muslim States and Societies at Perth University. Prior to that, she presented her work at multiple conferences and invited talks in the US, Canada, and Singapore.
